Benefit Cap

The Benefit Cap is a reduction in the total amount of benefit that you can receive. In November 2016, the Benefit Cap was reduced and changes were made depending on where you live in the UK.

The total amount you can receive if you live outside Greater London is £20,000 per year and £23,000 per year if you live in Greater London.

The benefits affected by the cap are:

  • Universal Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Income Support
  • Child Benefit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Maternity Allowance
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Bereavement Allowance
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Widowed Parent’s Allowance or Widowed Mother’s or Widow’s Pension.
