Aldwyck Housing Group helps create stars of the future

Aldwyck Housing Group has helped nine 16 to17-year-olds from its customer base in Luton and Central Bedfordshire make the transition from school into work or further education.

Partnering with the EY Foundation’s ‘Our Future’ employability and work experience programme, Aldwyck hosted the programme at its Houghton Regis Head Office.

During the programme, which is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute, the students received an introduction to Aldwyck as an employer, paid work experience, intensive skills training and one-to-one mentoring. The varied programme was designed to give the young people both an insight to the world of work, and to support them individually in their interests, aspirations and personal development.

As well as a graduation event, the programme’s finale included two of the students, Nicky and Charmaine, being chosen to take part in a video to showcase their time on the programme. The video was filmed at a new shared ownership development in Northampton, built by Lea Valley Homes, a subsidiary of Aldwyck Housing Group. The day was a great opportunity for the students to gain confidence speaking in front of a camera, and experience of working with different teams on a creative media project.

Nicky told us: “I first got to know Aldwyck through going to one of the weekly youth clubs it runs. I then became a volunteer and now help supervise the club, run activities and work with the other volunteers. It was great to be chosen to take part in the EY Our Future Programme. Spending time in an office and learning to do things like research, give presentations and work with different teams was great experience. I found being filmed nerve-wracking at first, but everybody was very encouraging and helped me relax - and I’m proud I proved to myself I could do it.”

Nicky continues to work as one of Aldwyck’s invaluable volunteers, and is leading sessions at our local youth hubs. He’s looking at college courses to pursue his interest in working in a public service, and hopes to go into the fire service.

EY Foundation Our Future Lead, Peter Olawaye, said, “Working with Aldwyck Housing has been a wonderful opportunity to support young people develop skills that are essential for the workplace.  We could see the young people blossom, growing in confidence during the employability skills training, paid work experience and mentoring. We look forward to working with Aldwyck again this year to help more young people move successfully into the workplace.”

Vanessa Dockerill, Aldwyck’s Executive Director of Development, who features in the video said: “As an affordable housing provider, one of our core purposes is to engage with local communities. What better way to start than with our young people – they are our future customers, our future employees and our future colleagues. It’s so important for us to get that early engagement and build relationships within our communities.

“We’ve seen all the students’ confidence grow in lots of ways, and we’re especially proud of Nicky winning the Young Person of the Programme Award. We look forward to hearing how all the students are getting on in their studies or jobs – they’re all stars and we wish them well.”
